SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres today announced they have named Randy Smith as Director of Player Development. Executive Vice President/General Manager Jed Hoyer made the announcement.

In his new position, Smith will continue to oversee the club's International Scouting efforts in 2010, while also directing the day-to-day operations of the Padres Player Development system.

"I am pleased to promote Randy Smith to Director of Player Development,' said Hoyer. "He has a unique and well-rounded background with experience in every facet of baseball operations. His leadership and passion for player development, working closely with Jason McLeod, will allow us to build a fundamentally sound farm system that will prepare our minor league players for success with the Padres."

With the promotion, Smith has now held nearly every position baseball has to offer over his 27 years in professional baseball. Most recently as Director, International Scouting/Major League Scout, he first joined San Diego in May of 1984 as an administrative assistant for the Beaumont Golden Gators, the former Double-A Texas League affiliate of the Padres. Since then he has also held the roles of Assistant Director of Scouting and Player Development, Scouting Director, General Manager, Special Assistant and Director of Professional and International Scouting in his 19 years with San Diego. In addition, he served as Assistant General Manager for the Colorado Rockies from 1991-93 and as General Manager of the Detroit Tigers from 1996-2001.

Named Padres General Manager June 9, 1993, at the age of 29, he became the then-youngest GM in Major League history. His tenure in San Diego included the acquisition of future National League MVP Ken Caminiti and eventual All-Stars Trevor Hoffman, Steve Finley, Andy Ashby and Brad Ausmus.

This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.
