  The Baseball & the Civil Right Movement Roundtable Discussion was developed as a platform for open dialogue relating to Baseball's role in challenging the indefensible intolerance that was once a norm in our society. Moderated each year by Harvard Law Professor Charles Ogletree, these discussions are thought-provoking, heart-wrenching, inspiring, and genuine, and take us through to experiences of the present day. Previous panelists who have shared their stories include Martin Luther King III, human rights activist and eldest son of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; Sharon Robinson, educator and daughter of Jackie Robinson; Ambassador Shabazz, Ambassador-at-large for Belize and eldest daughter of Malcolm X; Branch Rickey III, Pacific Coast League President and grandson of the late Branch Rickey; Baseball Hall of Famers Joe Morgan, Tony Perez, and Dave Winfield; Peter Gammons, MLB Network Analyst; Zina Garrison, Olympic Gold medalist former tennis star; Michele Jones, Special Assistant to U.S. Secretary of Defense/White House Liaison, among others. This year the Discussion will be housed in the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church and will be free and open to the public (but tickets are recommended).

  Each year the MLB Beacon Awards are presented to three individuals who through their life's work have left an indelible mark on society. The Beacon of Change is given to someone who alters societal and cultural views. The Beacon of Hope is presented to someone who impacts the future of society through his or her work and support of youth, and the Beacon of Life is awarded to an individual whose life has been emblematic of the spirit of the civil rights movement. The award presenters are chosen by the honorees based on a personal relationship, which allows for a genuine exchange of praise and respect for the accomplishments of these individuals. In addition to the Beacon Awards, special tributes are also made to people whose actions are the foundation of what the civil rights movement stands for.

  The Fifth Annual Civil Rights Game will be the final game in a three-game series between the Braves and NL East rival Philadelphia Phillies. During the pre-game ceremony, our MLB Beacon Award winners will be presented and tribute vignettes will be played on the screens throughout the stadium. Live civil rights-themed musical performances will take place on-field prior to the National Anthem. Teen sax sensation BK Jackson will take the field during the seventh inning stretch for an unforgettable rendition of "American the Beautiful." Players from both Clubs will be wearing throwback uniforms from one of the most prominent eras in Braves history.
