San Diego (9-4) at San Francisco (4-8)

Heavy rain in Philadelphia on Monday washed away the final game of a four-game series against the Phillies, though it won't affect their starting rotation for a two game series against their National League West rivals, the San Francisco Giants.

Padres probable pitcher

Jake Peavy

  • #44 RHP
  • (2-1) 3.98 ERA 23 SO
Peavy earned his second victory of the season in his last start against the Mets at Citi Field, but it wasn't easy. Peavy allowed a three-run home run to Carlos Delgado in the first inning, part of a 44-pitch effort in that frame alone. But he recovered well and got through his five innings after 114 pitches. Peavy allowed three runs on six hits with four walks and five strikeouts. He said afterwards that he didn't have his best stuff, though he impressed manager Bud Black. "You have to give credit to the Mets. Every at-bat they were fighting the ball off and fouling balls. Jake hung in there. He was awesome. He deserved the win, to me."

Giants will look to solve Peavy

The Giants had better enjoy their breather Monday. Because afterward, they'll have to relive much of the nightmare they endured a couple of weekends ago against the San Diego Padres.

Giants probable pitcher

Matt Cain

  • #18 RHP
  • (1-0) 2.08 ERA 8 SO
Cain is off to a great start, allowing three runs in 13 innings through two starts. He's even getting a little run support this year. That could help, especially against the Padres, against whom he pitches effectively but doesn't have much to show for it. He's faced the Padres more often (15 starts) than any other team and carries a 2.92 ERA against them. The Padres hit .197 against him but have beaten him five times in eight decisions. Only the Dodgers have beaten him more often.

Shortstop is grand for Giants (9-5) (5-8)

Giants 8, Padres 3

Peavy slammed

For the first time since the Wild Card tiebreaker in 2007, Jake Peavy gave up six runs in a game, with four of them coming on the first grand slam allowed in the right-hander's career. That helped send the Padres to consecutive losses for the first time this season.

Renteria rakes

The Giants' biggest offseason signing in terms of salary came through, as shortstop Edgar Renteria powered a grand slam and an RBI single for two of his three hits on the night. Travis Ishikawa clubbed a two-run double to seal a victory for Matt Cain, who pitched six solid innings.
