SAN DIEGO -- In the haste to get Padres pitcher Chris Young to the hospital on Wednesday after he was struck in the face with a line drive, San Diego manager Bud Black never got a chance to talk to his injured pitcher.

On Thursday morning, Black reached Young who was doing fairly well considering he suffered a nasal fracture and laceration to the nose when Albert Pujols' line drive in the third inning hit him on the bridge of his nose.

"He was in fairly good spirits," Black said. "He was in a little bit of discomfort, had a headache. He didn't get a lot of sleep last night. Considering what happened, he was feeling pretty good physically and emotionally."

Young was taken to Scripps Green Hospital in nearby Torrey Pines after he was hit on Wednesday. He was released after getting stitches.

The Padres placed Young on the 15-day disabled on Thursday only after they were sure he wouldn't be able to make his next scheduled start, which would have likely come on Tuesday against Washington.

"We were hoping for the best, based on the initial diagnosis. After conferring with the doctors last night, we felt it was the best thing for Chris to take a step back and not rush through any rehab," Black said. "There's some procedures that will take place over the next few days. He had stitches put in today and I think there's some adjustments facially he'll have."

Black said that a CT scan taken Wednesday indicated the Young did not suffer any kind of concussion. Young never lost consciousness after being hit and was able to walk off the field with little assistance.

"He was pretty level-headed throughout the ordeal on the feel. He was in control of what was going on," Black said.

The Padres also lost catcher Josh Bard to an injury in the same inning Wednesday when Pujols slid into his left ankle when Bard attempted to make a late block of the plate. He was also placed on the disabled list on Thursday.

Bard had an MRI on Thursday to determine the extent of the injury, though it was called a high ankle sprain. But Black said the injury could keep Bard off the field "from four to six weeks or more, depending on the severity."

"There's a little bit of a hot spot that showed up," Black said of the initial diagnosis of Bard' ankle.

The Padres spent late Wednesday night scrambling to fill the spots left by Young and Bard. They recalled three pitchers from Triple-A Portland -- Jared Wells, Mike Adams and Josh Banks -- and catcher Colt Morton from Double-A San Antonio.

San Diego also designated pitcher Justin Germano for assignment and optioned relief pitcher Joe Thatcher to Portland.
