There could be several new faces in the clubhouse at Chase Field for Friday's game, as catcher Michael Barrett is expected to land on the disabled list after suffering what the team was calling a fractured nose on Wednesday.
Barrett fouled a Ubaldo Jimenez pitch off his nose in the third inning, left the game and went to a nearby hosptial. Luke Carlin replaced him and will likely start on Friday in Arizona, with prospect Nick Hundley likely on his way from Triple-A Portland for the game.
The Padres, who currently have 13 pitchers on their roster, could make a move to add infielder Luis Rodriguez to give them some infield depth. Rodriguez, like Hundley, is playing for Triple-A Portland.
The news for Barrett isn't good, especially since he missed a month of action earlier this season with a strained right elbow. Opening Day starting catcher Josh Bard is still on the disabled list with a high left ankle sprain.
Pitching matchupSD: RHP Cha Seung Baek (1-4, 5.43 ERA)
Has the shine worn off for Baek? He has lost his past two decisions, allowing four runs on eight hits over five innings against the Mariners on Saturday. Baek, who was traded to San Diego a month ago for reliever Jared Wells, has allowed a combined 10 earned runs in his past two starts. Control is certainly not an issue with Baek, who has walked just one in his past 11 1/3 innings, but his ERA has risen to 5.43. Clay Hensley was recalled from Triple-A Portland on Tuesday. He might he be a candidate to claim a spot in the Padres' rotation as some point. ARI: RHP Dan Haren (8-4, 2.85 ERA)
Haren finished a distinguished June in style, which bodes well for him as he begins working on July. He was 3-0 in the month -- despite a ninth-inning foldup in his last start that cost him a victory -- and the D-backs won two other games in which he pitched. Over 41 innings in June, he gave up just six earned runs. When last seen, Haren put away the Marlins for seven innings without much resistance, avenging one of his defeats. He allowed five hits and walked two, striking out seven and allowing only one unearned run. He has lasted at least six innings in all but one of his 17 starts. It is an understatement to say he has been everything the D-backs thought they were getting when they plucked him from Oakland in the offseason. Tidbits
Relief pitcher Brett Tomko wasn't available for the second consecutive day after his cranky right elbow was still bothering him. San Diego manager Bud Black said that he was hopeful that Tomko could be available to pitch on Friday and that the off-day Thursday could do him some good. ... General manager Kevin Towers was in Portland on Thursday to watch the Padres' Triple-A team. Towers was recently in San Antonio and came away impressed with left-handed pitcher Steve Garrison, who improved to 6-3 and lowered his ERA to 2.98 with a victory on Tuesday against Tulsa. Tickets
