SAN DIEGO -- The Padres continued their offseason stockpiling of arms on Friday when they claimed right-hander Virgil Vasquez off waivers from the Boston Red Sox.

Vasquez, 26, was 12-12 with a 4.81 ERA in 27 starts for Triple-A Toledo, the top Minor League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. Vasquez was claimed off waivers by Boston from Detroit on Oct. 28.

Vasquez fits the Padres ideal as a strike-thrower who allowed 37 walks in 159 innings last season for Toledo. He had 115 strikeouts and tied for the International League lead with his two shutouts.

Vasquez was originally drafted by the Tigers in the seventh round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft. He made his Major League debut with the Tigers in 2007, going 0-1 with a 8.64 ERA in five appearances.

Vasquez is 54-48 with a 4.25 ERA in 140 Minor League starts.

The Padres now have 38 players on their 40-man roster, including 21 pitchers. The team has also signed three pitchers -- Kevin Correia, Chris Britton and Oneli Perez -- to Minor League contracts and invited them to Spring Training.
