ROCKIES 4, PADRES 2
at Tucson, Ariz.
Sunday, March 8
Rockies at the plate: Todd Helton, who had not played this spring because he was recovering from offseason back surgery, knocked a two-run shot to center his first time up and finished 1-for-2. Garrett Atkins, who had missed two games with a hip flexor strain, doubled twice, and Ryan Spilborghs had two doubles and a single. Ian Stewart doubled.
Padres at the plate: Chris Burke went 2-for-3, Nick Hundley tripled and Kyle Blanks doubled.
Rockies on the mound: Greg Reynolds became the starter because Greg Smith was scratched with flu-like symptoms. Reynolds gave up five hits and a walk and hit a batter, but he didn't give up any runs. Josh Fogg gave up one run and two hits in three innings.
Padres on the mound: Starter Chris Young gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits, which included the Helton homer. Nick Schmidt gave up a hit and a walk in two scoreless innings.
Cactus League records: Rockies 3-8, Padres 2-6-2
Up next: The Rockies are scheduled for an intrasquad game on Monday, with Jason Marquis, Glendon Rusch, Randy Flores and Huston Street among the pitchers who figure into the Major League picture. On Tuesday, lefty Jorge De La Rosa is scheduled to start against the Athletics at Hi Corbett Field.
The Padres play again in Tucson on Monday, this time at Tucson Electric Park against the D-backs, with right-hander Cha Seung Baek pitching.
