PEORIA, Ariz. -- Seven players, including rotation candidate Josh Geer, were dropped from the Padres' Major League camp roster on Monday.

Geer, a right-hander bidding for the fifth starting job, had a 10.43 ERA in five Cactus League starts and opponents hit .328 against him. Geer made his Major League debut last year and was 2-1 with a 2.67 ERA in five starts for the Padres.

He and five other players -- pitchers Scott Patterson and Joe Thatcher, catcher Jose Lobaton, infielder Matt Antonelli and outfielder Will Venable -- were optioned to Triple-A Portland.

In addition, outfielder Chad Huffman was re-assigned to Minor League camp.

The moves reduced the Padres' camp roster to 39 players including 14 non-roster invitees.
