Cabrera to begin rehab stint Tuesday
Wilson makes third consecutive start at shortstop

SAN DIEGO -- Padres rookie shortstop Everth Cabrera will begin his rehabilitation assignment Tuesday in the familiar confines of PETCO Park with the team's Class A affiliate, the Lake Elsinore Storm.Cabrera and the Storm will face the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, the Angels' affiliate, at 2:30 p.m. PT, in the first game of the eighth annual Storm/Padres doubleheader, with the Padres taking on the Phillies at 7:05 p.m. Purchasing one ticket garners admission to both games. Cabrera was placed on the 60-day disabled list April 20 after sustaining a fractured hamate bone in his left hand in the Padres' 5-4 loss to the Phillies on April 19. He underwent surgery April 21 at the Scripps Clinic in Carmel Valley.
Padres manager Bud Black said he anticipates Cabrera's rehabilitation stint will likely last 16-17 games.
"We want to make sure that he's healthy and playing well and everything is going according to plan," Black said Monday before the Padres played the Phillies. "Let's don't put a hard date that he'll be activated on the 61st day, OK? Let's don't get ahead of ourselves."
Cabrera, a 22-year-old Rule 5 Draft selection, hit .308 in 13 at-bats over six games before his injury. The day after he sustained his injury, the team traded for shortstop Chris Burke, who was previously with the Padres for most of Spring Training before being traded to the Mariners.
Cabrera was backing up Luis Rodriguez, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list after spraining his left ankle in a 6-4 loss May 13 to the Cubs. The Padres then claimed shortstop Josh Wilson from the D-backs.
In the absence of Cabrera and Rodriguez, Burke has received a majority of the starts, although Wilson made his third consecutive start Monday.
