SAN DIEGO -- Padres pitcher Chad Gaudin suffered his worst statistical outing of the season on Friday in his last start, an 11-6 loss to the Angels.![]() |
Allowing a season-high eight runs on 10 hits, Gaudin exited with the Padres trailing, 8-4, after three-plus innings in his shortest start this season.
"I had some bad luck, but I made good pitches," Gaudin said. "If I had to go back, I'd take back one pitch, and that was the hanging slider [for a home run] to Torii Hunter. Gaudin, who has allowed 13 runs, all earned, in his past two starts, said his confidence isn't shaken. He looks to stay on the attack on Wednesday in Game 2 of the Padres' three-game series against the Mariners in PETCO Park. "I feel that if I stick to my game plan and pitch aggressively like I do, things are going to work out," Gaudin said. Earlier in the season, Padres manager Bud Black said Gaudin needed to focus on reducing his number of walks. "A lot of my walks are just barely missing," Gaudin said. "I'm not all over the place. Sometimes you get into ruts where that happens." Gaudin, who allowed a season-high seven walks May 14 in a loss to the Cubs, walked none and struck out one in his last start. "I try to think positive out there and channel my thoughts on what I have to do, not what I did do," he said. "You have to have short-term memory loss." Pitching matchupSD: RHP Chad Gaudin (2-5, 6.16 ERA)
Many of the hits he allowed against the Angels were of the blooper variety, but the fact was Gaudin hasn't executed his pitches very well in recent weeks. He's now allowed 13 earned runs in his last two starts, spanning eight innings. Granted, Gaudin has been able to mostly avoid walks recently, but he's still been very hittable. SEA: LHP Garrett Olson (1-1, 4.26 ERA)
Olson's first victory with the Mariners wasn't a thing of beauty -- he allowed two runs on five hits, walked three and struck out one in five innings -- but he rebounded nicely after a rain delay to save the Seattle bullpen. Olson's at his best when he attacks hitters and lets his fielders do some work behind him. When he starts to nibble tentatively at the plate is when he gets in trouble. Tidbits
Pitcher Shaun Hill was moved to the 60-day disabled list on Tuesday, though not because he's had a setback along the way back from inflammation of his right elbow, an injury that landed him on the shelf on April 26. "He hasn't quite progressed," Padres manager Bud Black said. ... It looks like catcher Nick Hundley won't go on the DL after being hit on the left wrist with a pitch last Wednesday. Henry Blanco made his fourth consecutive start on Monday. Hundley, who appeared in the game late defensively on Tuesday, could start Wednesday. ... Scott Hairston, on the DL since June 3 with a strained left biceps, will likely need a few games on a Minor League rehab stint before returning. Hairston hit for the first time on Tuesday. ... The Padres on Tuesday signed right-handed pitcher Brian Lawrence to a Minor League contract. Lawrence, who will start Wednesday for Triple-A Portland, had been pitching for the Independent League Orange County Flyers. Lawrence was drafted by the Padres in 1998 and pitched five seasons with the Padres (2001-05), going 49-61 with a 4.10 ERA in 168 games. Tickets
