SAN DIEGO -- Padres ace Jake Peavy hopes to hear good news Tuesday when doctors temporarily remove the clunky walking boot he's been sporting for the past two weeks.Team orthopedic specialist Steven Copp will examine the tibialis posterior tendon of Peavy's right ankle and determine the proper course of treatment. According to early assessments, it's reasonable to expect that Peavy will need at least two more weeks in the walking cast.
Peavy originally injured his ankle running the bases May 22 against the Cubs. At the time, the medical staff treated Peavy for a case of tendinitis and heavily taped his ankle before he took to the mound.
The Padres placed Peavy on the 15-day disabled list June 13, retroactive to June 9, when an MRI revealed the strain.
The veteran right-hander last pitched on June 8 in a win against the D-backs. He pitched seven innings, allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out eight. Despite the solid outing, Peavy noticeably limped to first base after a sacrifice bunt and admitted feeling significant, but manageable, pain.
Peavy said Monday he doesn't feel any pain in the walking cast and has only removed the boot for daily ultrasound treatments. He's unsure exactly what Tuesday's checkup will entail but said he remains optimistic about his recovery time line.
"It's tough, but you know, injuries happen," Peavy said. "It's important to stay positive and not be thinking, 'Oh, woe is me.'"
The 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner is 6-6 with a 3.97 ERA in 13 starts this season. Peavy is the Padres' all-time strikeout leader and is tied at second place for the most wins in Padres' history.
