MILWAUKEE -- The Padres officially announced Tuesday that rookie right-handed pitcher Cesar Carrillo will start on Thursday in the series finale against the Brewers at Miller Park.Carrillo will become the 13th different pitcher to make a start this season for a starting rotation that has been anything but stable. It will mark Carrillo's Major League debut.
The Padres certainly have had plenty of injuries in their rotation this season. Now-departed pitcher Jake Peavy, who was traded to the White Sox on July 31, spent time on the disabled list. No. 2 starter Chris Young might be done for the season with a shoulder injury.
The new-look rotation took another turn recently when Chad Gaudin was dealt to the Yankees. His spot has been filled by Carrillo, the Padres' first-round pick (18th overall) in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Miami.
Carrillo had Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery on May 1, 2007, and he has been working his way back through the Minor League system ever since. He was 8-4 with a 4.24 ERA with Double-A San Antonio and 0-2 with a 6.19 ERA in three starts with Triple-A Portland.
Carrillo's velocity is back to where it was before the surgery. He's sitting in the low 90s mph and has hit 95 on occasion.
Kevin Correia, who gets the start against the Brewers on Wednesday, is the only member of the rotation who started the season there. Mat Latos, Carrillo, Clayton Richard and Tim Stauffer all started the year in the Minor Leagues.
Correia will be making his 24th start of the season. That's 17 more than anyone else in the rotation.
Pitching matchupSD: RHP Kevin Correia (7-9, 4.51 ERA)
What started poorly didn't end up as such a bad night for Correia in his last start, on Friday against the Mets. Correia allowed three hits and two runs in the first inning and then settled down, allowing seven hits and the two runs -- both unearned -- over six innings. Shortstop Everth Cabrera dropped a throw from catcher Henry Blanco in the first inning on an Angel Pagan attempted steal to pave the way for the two-run first inning. Correia, who walked two and struck out three, retired the final seven hitters he faced. MIL: RHP Carlos Villanueva (2-9, 6.05 ERA)
The right-hander tossed five-plus innings in his third start since a move from the bullpen, allowing four runs on six hits. Villanueva pitched against the Padres on Aug. 2. He allowed two hits and struck out three in five scoreless innings. Tidbits
Young, on the disabled list since June 15 with an impingement and bursitis in his right shoulder, saw Dr. Lewis Yocum on Tuesday in Los Angeles for another opinion on the shoulder. San Diego manager Bud Black said last week that Young's window for returning to the mound this season is closing. ... Dating to July 27, the Padres' bullpen has a 2.92 ERA while limiting opponents to a .199 average. San Diego relievers have worked scoreless ball in eight of the 14 games while averaging 0.99 strikeouts per inning pitched. The 'pen has not been tagged with a loss over that 14-game stretch, with the last one coming July 26 at Washington. ... Padres second baseman David Eckstein leads all Major League second basemen in fielding percentage (.997). He has one error in 367 total chances. Tickets
