SAN DIEGO -- Edgar Gonzalez, who was hit on the head with a pitch on July 18, is set to begin a rehab assignment on Wednesday as he works his way back from a scary injury that sent him to the hospital.Gonzalez was carted off the field and taken directly to Scripps Clinic, and was put on the disabled list the following day, but feels well enough now to resume baseball activities and attempt to come back and contribute near the beginning of September.
Manager Bud Black was unsure of the specific location where Gonzalez will rehab, but indicated a target of 10 days of limited action in the Minor Leagues with an eye toward activating Gonzalzez, on or near Sept. 1 when rosters expand to 40 players.
"He's feeling great," Black said. "We talked [Tuesday] afternoon and he's ready to pay. He's probably going to play five innings for the first couple of games and advance from there."
Gonzalez played in 64 games prior to the injury, batting .190 with four home runs and 12 RBIs while seeing time in both the infield and outfield.
Another injured player, outfielder Brian Giles, is not yet healthy enough to rehab in actual games due to a knee contusion that has sidelined him since June.
"He's got a little bit of edema around the area of soreness," Black said. "We're combining patience with exercise to get him to when he's confident enough to play, and we're not there yet."
Giles hit .191 in 61 games before going on the disabled list, with two home runs and 23 RBIs.
