Friars sign Cherry, send him to Triple-A

Padres trade Minors reliever Patterson to A's for cash

08/20/09 8:20 PM ET

SAN DIEGO -- The Padres traded right-handed reliever Scott Patterson to the A's on Thursday for cash considerations, and they signed reliever Rocky Cherry, who spent parts of two seasons pitching for the Cubs and Orioles.

Patterson led Triple-A Portland with 51 appearances and appeared in the Triple-A All-Star Game in July. He was 3-3 with one save and a 4.25 ERA.

The Padres claimed Patterson, 30, off waivers from the Yankees on Sept. 11, 2008. He appeared in three games with the Padres in the final month of last season and didn't allow a run in 3 1/3 innings before being felled by a back injury.

Cherry, who turned 30 on Wednesday, began the season with Triple-A Pawtucket, the Triple-A affiliate of the Red Sox. He was added to Portland's roster on Thursday.

Cherry, who primarily uses a sinker and a slider, was 3-1 with a 2.57 ERA in 63 innings in 38 games for Pawtucket and didn't allow a run in the month of May.

Cherry appeared in 40 games with the Cubs (2007) and the Orioles (2007-08), posting a 1-4 record with a 5.77 ERA. He was released by the Red Sox on Tuesday.
