Director of baseball operations was with Friars for nine years

SAN DIEGO -- Jeff Kingston, the Padres' director of baseball operations, was hired on Thursday as an assistant general manager with the Seattle Mariners.

Kingston, 32, spent the past nine seasons in San Diego's baseball operations department.

Kingston, who interned with the Padres and gained experience under now-Boston Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein and current Padres general manager Kevin Towers, became San Diego's director of baseball operations in 2002.

"I am excited to add Jeff to our front office staff," Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik said. "He has assisted in several capacities with San Diego and his skill set and diversity will aid this organization as we move forward."

Towers and Zduriencik previously worked together in Pittsburgh.

While with the Padres, Kingston's primary responsibilities included assisting Towers and assistant general manager Fred Uhlman Jr. in player acquisitions and roster, payroll and budget management.

Kingston is a 1999 graduate of Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. He holds a degree in economics.
