Padres re-sign coaching staff for 2010
Group has spent more than 40 years combined with club

SAN DIEGO -- Manager Bud Black said in the final week of the regular season that he expected his entire coaching staff to be back for the 2010 season.On Thursday, the Padres made it official, announcing that they have agreed to one-year contract extensions for the 2010 season with their current Major League coaching staff.
Bench coach Ted Simmons, hitting coach Randy Ready, pitching coach Darren Balsley, first-base coach Rick Renteria, third-base coach Glenn Hoffman and bullpen coach Darrel Akerfelds will all return to Black's staff in the same roles they held in 2009.
Black's contract was extended through 2010, with a club option for 2011, on Aug. 7.
Simmons will return for his 11th year with San Diego and second as bench coach.
Ready will return for his seventh season working in the Padres organization and first full season as hitting coach, having been promoted to his current post on July 31 after managing at Triple-A Portland.
Ready has interviewed for the vacant managerial opening with the Houston Astros this fall.
Balsley will return for his seventh full season as the Padres pitching coach after being named to the post on May 17, 2003.
Since beginning his first full season as pitching coach in 2004, the Padres have posted a 4.08 ERA, fifth-best in the National League. He guided the San Diego staff to a Major League-best 3.70 ERA in 2007, and a National League-low 3.87 ERA in 2006, marking the first two times in franchise history the team has led the league in ERA.
Renteria will be entering his third season as the Padres' first-base coach. He spent the previous four seasons managing in the Padres' Minor League system at Class A Lake Elsinore (2004-06) and Triple-A Portland (2007).
Hoffman, the older brother of former Padres closer Trevor Hoffman, will return for his fifth season as the third-base coach. The 2010 campaign will mark his 12th as a Major League coach and 35th in professional baseball.
Akerfelds will be entering his ninth full season as the Padres' bullpen coach. The 47-year-old was originally given the assignment on June 11, 2001.
