White Sox hurler Colon named American League Pepsi Player of the Week
Chicago White Sox pitcher Bartolo Colon, whose pair of complete game victories helped keep his club's share of first place in the American League Central Division, has been named American League Pepsi Player of the Week for the period of September 8-14.
Colon was 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA last week, allowing 15 hits in 18.0 innings while striking out six and walking three. The 30-year-old right-hander earned a win at Fenway Park on Saturday, allowing no earned runs and just five hits in a 3-1 victory over the Red Sox. Last Monday, he went the distance in a win over fellow AL Central contender Minnesota, surrendering just two runs. Colon has thrown three straight complete games overall and his eight complete games on the season rank second in the Major Leagues. The White Sox and Twins, currently sporting identical 80-69 records atop the AL Central, begin a three-game set on Tuesday night at the Metrodome.
Other pitchers considered for the weekly award were Mark Buehrle (2-0, 2.77 ERA) of the White Sox; Mike Mussina (2-0, 2.57 ERA) and Mariano Rivera (4.0 IP, 0 R, 4 saves) of the New York Yankees; Kansas City's Jamey Wright (1-0, seven-hit shutout); Seattle's Joel Piqeiro (1-0, 1.00 ERA, 1 CG); and Toronto's Roy Halladay (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 CG). Halladay became baseball's first 20-game winner this season on Thursday at Tampa Bay.
Other players on the ballot included Boston's Bill Mueller (AL-best .500, 2 HR, 4 RBI) and Manny Ramirez (.429, 2 HR, 4 RBI, AL-best .571 OBP); Carlos Lee (.429, 3 HR, 6 RBI, AL-best .857 SLG) of the White Sox; Cleveland's Alex Escobar (.478, 4 RBI) and Travis Hafner (.412, 1 HR, 4 RBI); and Nick Johnson (.400, 2 HR, 3 RBI, AL-best 9 R) of the Yankees. Mueller leads the AL with a .329 batting average.
Colon will receive a Tourneau luxury Swiss timepiece as the AL Pepsi Player of the Week.
