San Diego -- There will be a new top dog at PETCO Park this year, and the Padres are asking fans to choose it for them. Team officials today launched the "Great Friar Frank Taste Test," a month-long campaign giving fans the opportunity to select the new Friar Frank hot dog for the 2005 season through a series of countywide tasting events.

The campaign was kicked off to the public at Westfield Shoppingtown-Horton Plaza in downtown San Diego, where a celebrity panel of experts including Padres broadcaster Ted Leitner, downtown restauranteur David Cohn and long-time Horton Plaza hot dog vendor Keith Black placed the first votes for the new dog.

"We know that our fans are passionate about their hot dogs," said Richard Andersen, Executive Vice President & Managing Director, PETCO Park. "That's why we're turning to them to help us pick the new Friar Frank, which will lead what we believe will be one of baseball's best lineups of sausages and hot dogs."

In addition to the new Friar Frank, PETCO Park will feature five other sausages and hot dogs, including a new grilled sausage, spicy/Jalapeno dog, veggie dog, Big Dawg (1/2 pound) and Hebrew National Kosher Dog.

The Padres also announced the introduction of flat grills to PETCO Park for the 2005 season. Fans will have access to freshly-grilled hot dog and sausages, with grilled peppers and onions, at numerous locations throughout the ballpark.

"The grills will result in better tasting hot dogs and sausages," said Andersen. "They are one of a number of positive changes we're making to enhance the sites, smells and tastes of PETCO Park."

Other changes planned for PETCO Park include:

  • Expanded variety of concession items including Super Nacho Bars, local favorites Anthony's clam chowder bowls and Rubio's Street Tacos and Steak Burritos
  • Addition of six new points of sale
  • Addition of Randy Jones Barbecue to the Mercado (formerly Home Plate Marketplace)
  • An over-hauled graphics and directional signage program

"In 2005, we're committed to setting a new standard for variety, quality, service and the overall presentation of concessions at PETCO Park," said Andersen. "Fans will find a more traditional appeal to the ballpark with some uniquely San Diego touches."

In addition to the Westfield Shoppingtown-Horton Plaza tasting, the Padres will hold four additional tasting events during the month of February. The winning hot dog will be announced in March.
