SAN DIEGO -- Rawlings Sporting Goods Company announced today that San Diego Padres center fielder Mike Cameron has won a 2006 National League Gold Glove Award. This marks the third Gold Glove for Cameron who previously captured the award in 2001 and 2003 while playing for the Seattle Mariners.
Cameron, 33, played 141 games in center field for the Padres in 2006, including 139 starts. He compiled a .984 fielding percentage, committing six errors in 379 total chances. His six assists were tied for fourth best among National League center fielders, while his 367 putouts and 379 total chances each finished third among all outfielders in the Senior Circuit.
Cameron is the first Padre to win a Gold Glove Award since Ken Caminiti earned the honor as a third baseman in 1997. He is also the fourth San Diego outfielder to garner the award joining Dave Winfield (1979, 1980), Tony Gwynn (1986, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1991) and Steve Finley (1995, 1996). Overall, Cameron is the seventh Padre to win a Gold Glove, bringing the total of Gold Gloves won by San Diego players to 18.
Presented annually, the Rawlings Gold Glove Award recognizes the best fielders at each position for both the American and National Leagues. Managers and coaches of each team select a squad of the best defensemen in their league, excluding their own team.
