SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres today acquired outfielder Jason Lane from Houston in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers made the announcement.

Lane, 30, has played in 68 games with the Astros this season, batting .178 (30-for-169) with five doubles, eight home runs, 27 RBIs, 18 runs scored and 16 walks. He made 42 starts in the field, including 27 in center field and 15 in right field. Lane also appeared in 50 games for Triple-A Round Rock in 2007, hitting .319 (59-for-185) with 15 doubles, nine home runs and 41 RBIs. He is expected to join the Padres for tomorrow night's game in San Francisco.

Selected by Houston in the sixth round of the 1999 June Draft, Lane has hit .241 (291-for-1206) with 64 doubles, seven triples, 61 home runs, 189 RBIs and 165 runs scored in 494 Major League games with the Astros (2002-07). A native of Santa Rosa, Calif., he is a graduate of the University of Southern California, where he earned All-America honors during his senior season (1999).

San Diego's 40-man roster is now at 40.
