Padres recall catcher Luke Carlin and purchase the contract of outfielder Chip Ambres from Tiple-A Portland

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres today recalled catcher Luke Carlin and purchased the contract of outfielder Chip Ambres from Triple-A Portland. Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers made the announcement.

Carlin is in his third stint with the Padres this season, having made his Major League debut on May 10. In 33 games with San Diego, he has gone 14-for-91 (.154) with three doubles, one triple, one home run, six RBI and 12 runs scored. In 31 games with Portland this season, he has hit .261 (23-for-88) with three doubles, four home runs, 19 RBI and 12 runs scored. The 27-year-old catcher posted a .396 on-base percentage with the Beavers while slugging .432. Over parts of seven minor league seasons in the Tigers (2002) and Padres organizations (2003-08), Carlin has hit .242 (333-for-1,373) with 70 doubles, nine triples, 11 home runs, 135 RBI and 159 runs scored in 446 games.

Ambres went 2-for-17 (.118) in eight games earlier this year for the Padres, making four starts in right field after his contract was purchased from Triple-A Portland on July 8. He was designated for assignment on July 29. The 28-year-old hit .279 (115-for-412) with 27 doubles, seven triples, 22 home runs, 77 RBI and 82 runs scored in 112 games with the Beavers. Over parts of three Major League seasons with the Kansas City Royals (2005), New York Mets (2007) and Padres (2008), Ambres has hit .230 (38-for-165) with eight doubles, four home runs, 10 RBI and 25 runs scored in 64 games.
