SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres announced today that the club has promoted Dave Winfield to Executive Vice President/Senior Advisor, Paul DePodesta to Executive Vice President and Fred Uhlman Jr. to Vice President/Assistant General Manager. Padres Chief Executive Officer Sandy Alderson made the announcements.
"I am pleased to announce the well-deserved promotions of Dave, Paul and Fred," said Alderson. "Together they bring a combined 72 years of experience in professional baseball and we are proud and fortunate to have each of them on our staff."
Winfield, 57, has been a member of the Padres Board of Directors for the last eight years, assuming the role of Vice President/Senior Advisor in May of 2002. He is involved in several Padres programs including FriarFit and the Salute to the Negro Leagues. Winfield also represented the team as part of this year's exhibition series with the Dodgers in China and has traveled to the Dominican Republic in his capacity as Senior Advisor to the club with respect to community outreach and education initiatives.
In 2001, he became the first player to enter the National Baseball Hall of Fame as a San Diego Padre. Inducted in 2000, Winfield is also one of seven members of the Padres Hall of Fame. A 12-time All-Star with seven Gold Gloves and six Silver Slugger awards, his No. 31 Jersey is one of five numbers retired by San Diego. Winfield began his association with the organization in 1973, when he joined the Big League club directly out of the University of Minnesota. He spent the first eight seasons of his 22-year Major League career with San Diego.
DePodesta, 35, will continue to support Baseball Operations and other aspects of the franchise. He first joined the Padres in July of 2006 as Special Assistant for Baseball Operations. The 2009 season will mark his 14th year in Major League Baseball, having previously worked in the Cleveland Indians (1996-1998), Oakland Athletics (1999-2003) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2004-05) organizations. DePodesta's experience includes service as Assistant General Manager with the A's and Executive Vice President/General Manager for the Dodgers, leading Los Angeles to the National League West Division crown in 2004. A native of Alexandria, VA, DePodesta graduated cum laude from Harvard University in 1995 with a degree in economics, where he also played baseball and football.
Uhlman, 41, is a veteran of 24 seasons in professional baseball. He is heavily involved in the day-to-day baseball operations of the club and was instrumental in the completion of the Padres new facility in the Dominican Republic. After 10 years in the Baltimore Orioles organization, Uhlman joined the Padres in March of 1995 as a special assistant to the general manager. He was named Assistant General Manager in January of 1996. Raised in Georgetown, TX, Uhlman moved to Baltimore in 1985 and joined the Orioles as a part-time assistant in player development and scouting. He attained full-time status in 1987 when he was promoted to Assistant to the Director of Scouting. In 1991, he was named Baltimore's Assistant Director of Scouting.
