SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres announced today that Jimmy Jones has been named pitching coach of the club's Rookie-level affiliate in Peoria, Arizona. Vice President of Scouting and Player Development Grady Fuson made the announcement.
The 44-year-old was originally drafted by San Diego in the first round of the 1982 June Draft out of Thomas Jefferson High School in Dallas, Texas. In an eight-year Major League career with the Padres (1986-88), New York Yankees (1989-1990), Houston Astros (1991-92) and Montreal Expos (1993), Jones went 43-39 with a 4.46 ERA (374 ER/755.0 IP) in 153 games (118 starts). He appeared in 62 games (54 starts) during his three years in San Diego.
Jones spent 14 years in professional baseball including two years with the Tokyo Giants (1994-95). Most recently, he served as head coach at the high school level, managing at Coram Deo Academy in Flower Mound, Texas since 2001. Jones has also taught as a private instructor, giving both individual and team lessons in Texas over the last six years.
