2009 Promotional lineup

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres today unveiled a specially-designed logo to celebrate the 40th anniversary, recognizing the club's 40 years as a Major League Baseball franchise. The team also announced its regular-season promotional lineup, which boasts 40 major promotional dates composed of all-fan and youth giveaways and 13 fireworks shows.

Please see the attached documents for full-color images of the logo and the complete 2009 promotional lineup.

The logo will be displayed on a uniform patch and sewn onto three of the four Padres jerseys - home, away and the alternate blue tops (excluding camouflage). It will also be featured prominently in club advertising, promotional materials and throughout PETCO Park.

Appropriately, the Swinging Friar is central to the logo. The Friar's origins pre-date the Major League Padres, debuting as the Pacific Coast League Padres' official insignia in 1961. The image, originally sketched by San Diego High graduate Carlos Hadaway, was also utilized by the Major League Padres from 1969 through 1984. After the hiatus, the logo returned in 1995, followed by the Swinging Friar coming to life in the form of a mascot in 1996.

The logo's overall design is circular, incorporating a home plate shape. The circular motif was selected in deference to each of the club's various circular-shaped logos, utilized from 1969 through 2003. In 2004, the club re-designed its official marks, showcasing a home plate-shaped design as its primary logo.

Opening Day (April 6 vs. Los Angeles Dodgers) again features Padres Caps for all fans. The caps will include the 40th anniversary logo.

The promotional lineup includes three weekends recognizing the 40th anniversary: 1969 Inaugural Season Weekend (April 24-26 vs. Pittsburgh); 1984 National League Champions 25-year Anniversary Weekend (May 22-24 vs. Chicago Cubs); Padres Hall of Fame Weekend (Aug. 7-9 vs. New York Mets).

Each weekend game will feature major promotions:

Friday Friarworks will follow each Friday home game. The 13 scheduled shows mark the most shows in PETCO Park history, topping the eight shows presented in 2008.
Saturday means an all-fan premium giveaway for everyone in attendance. Highlights include Adrian Gonzalez Long-sleeve T-shirts (April 11 vs. San Francisco), Padres 1969 Replica Jerseys (April 25 vs. Pittsburgh) and a San Diego favorite, Padres Beach Towels (July 4 vs. Los Angeles Dodgers).
Sunday remains Kids Days, which include giveaways and events for children 14 and younger. The kids giveaways include: Padres 40th Anniversary Pillowcases (April 12 vs. San Francisco), 1969 Pennants (April 26 vs. Pittsburgh) and Padres Hot Wheels (July 19 vs. Colorado).

The Padres will again offer seven 2-for-1 Days in 2009. For all midweek afternoon games, fans can purchase two tickets for the price of one in four select seating areas - Field Reserved, Toyota Terrace Level Reserved, Upper Infield Reserved and Upper Reserved. They can also enjoy two hot dogs for the price of one.

Also in celebration of the 40th anniversary, the Padres are asking fans to relive great moments in club history with the Celebrating 40 Years of Padres Memories promotion. Beginning in March, selected memories sent in by fans will be posted on padres.com. Winners will receive a prize package that includes game tickets and autographed items.
