Padres announce roster moves
Club selects Ekstrom and Banks, transfers Hill to 60-day DL

San Diego -- The San Diego Padres on Tuesday announced they have selected right-handed pitcher Mike Ekstrom from Triple-A Portland, optioned right-handed pitcher Edwin Moreno to Portland, selected right-handed pitcher Josh Banks from Portland and placed right-handed pitcher Luke Gregerson on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to June 8) with a strained right shoulder. Additionally the club has transferred right-handed pitcher Shawn Hill to the 60-day disabled list. Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers made today's announcements.
Ekstrom, 25, made his Major League debut with the Padres in 2008, going 0-2 with a 7.45 ERA (8 ER/9.2 IP) in eight relief appearances. With Portland in 2009, he has a 3-1 record along with a 2.41 ERA (10 ER/37.1 IP). In 25 games (one start), opponents are hitting just .192 off him in Triple-A.
Banks, 26, has appeared in 14 games for the Beavers, making eight starts. He has a 3-4 record and 2.47 ERA (17 ER/62.0 IP). As a reliever, he is 2-0 with a 0.53 ERA (1 ER/17.0 IP), limiting opponents to a .158 average out of the pen. Banks made 17 appearances (14 starts) for the Friars in 2008, going 3-6 with a 4.75 ERA.
Moreno, 28, has made two stints with the Padres, appearing in 19 games. He is 1-3 with a 4.84 ERA (12 ER/22.1 IP), tossing scoreless ball in 12 of his appearances. With Portland, Moreno has gone 0-1 with six saves and a 2.08 ERA (3 ER/13.0 IP), striking out eight compared to just three walks.
Gregerson, 25, made his Major League debut with the Padres this season. He is 0-3 with a 3.15 ERA (12 ER/34.1 IP) in 30 relief appearances and has allowed just one run in his last 14 games, posting a 0.52 ERA (1 ER/17.1 IP) while limiting opponents to a .190 average. Gregerson has a 0.41 ERA (1 ER/34.1 IP) at home, having not allowed a run in 16 of 17 outings at PETCO Park.
Hill, 28, was originally placed on the disabled list April 26 with inflammation of the right elbow. Prior to his injury, he made three starts for the Padres, going 1-1 with a 5.25 ERA (7 ER/12.0 IP). Originally signed by the Montreal Expos as a sixth-round selection in the 2000 First-Year Player Draft, Hill has gone 8-16 with a 4.95 ERA (120 ER/218.1 IP) in 40 career starts over five seasons with the Expos/Nationals (2004-08) and Padres (2009).
