Padres acquire RHP Ryan Webb, RHP Craig Italiano and a player to be named from Oakland A's in exchange for OF Scott Hairston

San Diego, CA -- The San Diego Padres announced today they have acquired right-handed pitchers Ryan Webb and Craig Italiano and a player to be named later in exchange for outfielder Scott Hairston. Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers made the announcement.

Webb, 23, has appeared in 31 games (two starts) for Triple-A Sacramento this season, going 7-1 with two saves and a 4.34 ERA (22 ER/45.2 IP). He has recorded 39 strikeouts compared to 15 walks, working scoreless ball in 19 of his 29 relief appearances. Out of the bullpen, Webb is posting a 3.82 ERA (16 ER/37.2 IP) with 30 strikeouts and seven walks. Originally signed as a fourth-round selection in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft, he is 34-40 with two saves and a 5.29 ERA (324 ER/551.0 IP) over parts of six minor league seasons in the A's organization (2004-09).

Italiano, 22, has made 16 starts for Single-A Stockton this season, going 5-6 with a 5.63 ERA (48 ER/76.2 IP). He is averaging 8.8 strikeouts per 9.0 IP with 75 compared to 40 walks. Originally signed as a second-round selection in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, Italiano has gone 14-16 with a 5.27 ERA (135 ER/230.1 IP) in 62 games (48 starts) over parts of five minor league seasons in the A's organization (2005-09).

Hairston, 29, has hit .307 (59-for-192) with 14 doubles, one triple, 10 home runs, 29 RBI and 25 runs scored in 55 games for the Friars this season. Since being acquired by the Padres from the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 27, 2007, he has gone 165-for-605 (.273) with 37 doubles, five triples, 35 home runs, 80 RBI and 83 runs scored in 198 games. Over parts of six Major League seasons with the Diamondbacks (2004-07) and Padres (2007-09), Hairston has hit .256 (296-for-1,155) with 68 doubles, 12 triples, 51 home runs, 127 RBI and 145 runs scored in 399 games.
