Padres acquire Salazar from Orioles
Club deals away reliever Meredith to obtain infielder

SAN DIEGO -- The Padres announced Sunday that they had acquired infielder Oscar Salazar from the Orioles in exchange for right-handed pitcher Cla Meredith. Executive vice president/general manager Kevin Towers made the announcement.
Salazar, 31, has played in 17 games for the Orioles this year, hitting .419 (13-for-31) with two homers, six RBIs and four runs scored. He has appeared at first base, shortstop, third base and left field for Baltimore. In 50 games for Triple-A Norfolk, Salazar was hitting .372 (74-for-199) with 17 doubles, one triple, 10 home runs, 43 RBIs and 31 runs scored.
The right-handed-hitting utility infielder made his Major League debut with the Tigers in 2002 at the age of 23. Over parts of three Major League seasons with the Tigers ('02) and Orioles ('08-09), Salazar hit .301 (40-for-133) with four doubles, eight home runs, 24 RBIs and 19 runs scored in 59 games.
Meredith, 26, made 35 relief appearances for the Padres this season, going 4-2 with a 4.17 ERA (17 ER in 36 2/3 IP). Originally acquired from Boston in 2006, Meredith is 14-12 with a 3.49 ERA (93 ER in 239 2/3 IP) in 236 career relief appearances over parts of five Major League seasons with the Red Sox ('05) and Padres ('06-09). Meredith leaves the Padres ranking sixth on the franchise all-time list with 233 relief appearances.
