San Diego, CA - Rawlings Sporting Goods Company announced today that San Diego Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez has won a 2009 National League Rawlings Gold Glove Award.
With his second Rawlings Gold Glove, Gonzalez becomes seventh Padre to receive multiple Gold Glove honors, joining Dave Winfield, Ozzie Smith, Tony Gwynn, Benito Santiago, Steve Finley and Ken Caminiti. He is the only Padres first baseman to garner the award. Additionally, this marks the fourth consecutive season in which a Padres player has been honored with a Rawlings Gold Glove.
The 27-year-old Gonzalez appeared in 156 games (153 starts) at first base this season (1359.2 innings), committing seven errors in 1,367 total chances with a .995 fielding percentage. He ranked tied for third among NL first basemen in games played and fourth in innings.
Presented annually, the Rawlings Gold Glove Award recognizes the best fielders at each position for both the American and National Leagues. Managers and coaches of each team select a squad of the best defensemen in their league, excluding their own team. Below is a complete look at the Padres all-time Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners:
