San Diego, CA -- The San Diego Padres announced today they have selected right-handed pitcher Craig Italiano, left-handed pitcher Steve Garrison and outfielder Chad Huffman from Triple-A Portland. Executive Vice President/General Manager Jed Hoyer made the announcement.

Italiano, 23, was acquired from the Oakland Athletics along with RHP Ryan Webb and RHP Sean Gallagher in the Scott Hairston trade on July 5, 2009. He went 0-1 with a 1.44 ERA (5 ER/31.1 IP) over 19 relief appearances with Single-A Lake Elsinore after going 5-6 with a 5.63 ERA (48 ER/76.2 IP) over 16 starts for Single-A Stockton in the A's organization. He recorded an average of 9.9 strikeouts per 9.0 IP in 2009 with 119 compared to 50 walks. Originally signed by Oakland as a second-round selection in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, Italiano has gone 14-17 with a 4.82 ERA (140 ER/261.2 IP) in 81 games (48 starts) while recording 305 strikeouts against 144 walks over parts of five minor league seasons in the A's (2005-09) and Padres (2009) organizations. Over his career he has recorded an average of 10.5 strikeouts per 9.0 IP (305 SO/261.2 IP).

Garrison, 23, went 1-2 with a 5.56 ERA (21 ER/34.0 IP) while recording 32 strikeouts in 13 games (12 starts) between Rookie-Level Peoria, Single-A Lake Elsinore and Double-A San Antonio in 2009. The lefty did not begin the 2009 minor league season until June 25 after recovering from left labrum surgery. He participated in the Arizona Fall League and went 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA (8 ER/18.2 IP) over six starts for the Peoria Saguaros. Originally signed as a 10th-round selection in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers, the Padres acquired Garrison along with LHP Joe Thatcher and RHP Will Inman from the Brewers in exchange for RHP Scott Linebrink on July 25, 2007. Through parts of five minor league seasons in the Brewers (2005-07) and Padres (2007-09) organizations, Garrison has gone 27-24 with a 3.61 ERA (174 ER/433.2 IP) over 92 games (83 starts) while recording 347 strikeouts against 106 walks.

Huffman, 24, hit .269 (126-for-469) with 20 home runs, 68 RBI, 65 runs scored, 30 doubles, 220 total bases and 57 walks over 135 games for Triple-A Portland in 2009, leading the Beavers in home runs, doubles and total bases. He was selected to the Pacific Coast League roster for the 2009 Triple-A All-Star Game and was crowned the winner of the Home Run Derby. Originally signed as a second-round selection by San Diego in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, Huffman has hit .289 (463-for-1601) with 60 home runs, 100 doubles, 270 RBI, 267 runs scored and 215 walks in 446 games over parts of four minor league seasons in the Padres organization.
