The San Diego Padres announced today that they have placed infielder David Eckstein on the 15-day disabled list with a right calf strain and have reinstated outfielder Will Venable from the disabled list. Executive Vice President/General Manager Jed Hoyer made the announcement.
Eckstein, 35, is on the disabled list for the first time this season and second in his tenure with the Padres. He previously spent time on the disabled list from July 6-28, 2009 with a strained right hamstring. In 78 games this season he has hit .279 (86-for-308) with a home run, 20 doubles, 22 RBI, 31 runs scored, six stolen bases, 16 walks and 15 strikeouts. The 10-year veteran is also the only infielder in the Majors this season with at least 70 games started to have not committed an error. San Diego has gone 41-30 in his 71 starts this year.
Venable, 27, was placed on the disabled list on July 3 (retroactive to July 2) with a lower back strain and missed a total of 13 games. In seven rehab starts between Single-A Lake Elsinore and Double-A San Antonio, five in right field and two as the designated hitter, he hit .150 (3-for-20) with a double, an RBI, six walks, three stolen bases and 10 strikeouts. In 69 games for San Diego this year he has hit .238 (51-for-214) with six doubles, four triples, eight home runs, 32 RBI and 35 runs scored. He has also reached base in 45 of his 54 starts and ranks second on the team with a career-high 14 stolen bases.
