Peavy wins Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week

Bank of America donates $1,000 to Little League Urban Initiative

San Diego Padres pitcher Jake Peavy, who struck out a league-high 19 batters, has been named Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week of August 1-7, 2005. Bank of America, the official bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the National League and American League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect the bank's long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.

The All-Star right-hander tied for the league lead with two wins, one complete-game and one shutout. Over 16.0 innings pitched he permitted 12 hits, three runs, earned and two walks. During his two performances, Peavy constructed a 1.69 ERA while helping lead the Padres to a 5-1 record and pushing them back on top of the NL West. Peavy hurled a complete game shutout at Washington on August 7th, tallying 10 strikeouts to earn his 10th victory of the year. It marked the sixth time this season that Jake had eclipsed 10 strikeouts in a game. In his first start of the week Jake struck out nine batters to defeat the Pirates.

Other nominees this past week included Geoff Jenkins (.500, 3 HR, 4 RBI) of the Brewers; Atlanta's Wilson Betemit (.455, 2 R, 3 RBI), Jeff Francoeur (.387, 2 HR, 5 RBI), Marcus Giles (.400, 6 R, 7 RBI) and Andruw Jones (.250, 3 HR, 8 RBI); Mike Piazza (.400, 2 HR, 9 RBI) and Cliff Floyd (.389, 2 HR, 6 RBI) of the Mets; Pittsburgh's Jason Bay (.320, 2 HR, 7 RBI), Chris Duffy (.500, 1 HR, 4 RBI) and Zach Duke (2-0, 2.87 ERA, 8 SO); Chris Carpenter (1-0, 1.59 ERA, 16 SO), Mark Grudzielanek (.455, 5 R, 2 RBI), Albert Pujols (.333, 3 HR, 5 RBI) and So Taguchi (.409, 2 HR, 6 RBI) of the Cardinals; Arizona's Craig Counsell (.500, 4 R) and Chad Tracy (.313, 3 HR, 4 RBI); Miguel Cabrera (.357, 2 HR, 5 RBI) and Luis Castillo (.435, 1 HR, 3 RBI) of the Marlins; Houston's Roger Clemens (2-0, 0.64 ERA, 12 SO); Luis A. Gonzalez (.429, 2 HR, 4 RBI) of the Rockies; Cincinnati's Sean Casey (.364, 2 HR, 4 RBI); Jeff Weaver (2-0, 1.93 ERA, 10 SO) of the Dodgers; Washington's John Patterson (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 13 SO); and Peavy's San Diego teammate Eric Young (.429, 2 HR, 6 RBI).

As part of the award, Bank of America will make a $1,000 donation to the Little League Urban Initiative on behalf of Jake Peavy.
