Reineke gets to face Webb again

San Diego (49-82) vs. Arizona (68-63), Tuesday, 7:05 p.m. PT

SAN DIEGO -- The Padres will look to build on the momentum of Monday's dramatic win over the National League West-leading Diamondbacks with another victory Tuesday as they play the middle game of a three-game set.

The Padres had lost seven straight games and 10 of their last 12 before winning Monday. They had lost five straight to the Diamondbacks.

The Padres will give the ball to young Chad Reineke, as he attempts to avenge Thursday's loss to D-backs ace Brandon Webb. In that game, Reineke went a solid six innings, allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks in what was the second start of his Major League career.

Reineke beat the Phillies in his first start for his first Major League win.

His counterpart, Webb, is having a Cy Young Award-caliber season. Webb is 8-0 in his last 11 starts, with his last loss on June 22 against the Twins.

Pitching matchup
SD: RHP Chad Reineke (1-1, 4.91 ERA)
In Reineke's second career big league start, he may have pitched well enough to win, but he went up against Webb, who won the duel in Arizona. The rookie had his first quality start but made a few mistake pitches, most notably to Conor Jackson, who smacked a two-run double in the fifth inning.

ARI: RHP Brandon Webb (19-4, 2.74 ERA)
Webb might have had his best sinker in his last outing against the Padres, limiting them to just three hits across seven innings as he picked up his Major League-leading 19th win. Webb had a little bit of a scare in the sixth inning, when a Kevin Kouzmanoff line drive hit him in his ribs, but the right-hander will make the start.

Catcher Michael Barrett, on the disabled list since July 4 with a fractured nose, was at PETCO Park on Monday and played catch before the game. With only 30 games left in the regular season, he likely won't return. Barrett will be a free agent after the season. ... Manager Bud Black said that Brett Tomko, who has been unavailable the last two days because of a sore neck, was doing better Monday. ... Brian Giles was back in the leadoff spot on Monday. Giles is hitting .273 in the leadoff spot this season. ... Right-hander Chris Young will throw a simulated game on Tuesday at PETCO Park. Another pitcher on the disabled list, Shawn Estes, gets a rehab start Tuesday for Triple-A Portland. ... First-round Draft pick Allan Dykstra made his professional debut Sunday for Class A Lake Elsinore, going 0-for-3.
