Padres to open '09 at home vs. Dodgers

San Diego also to play in Mets' first game at new Citi Field

DENVER -- The Padres will open the 2009 season with a six-game homestand at PETCO Park against National League West rivals Los Angeles and San Francisco.

On Wednesday, Major League Baseball released its master schedule for the 2009 season.

The Padres will play host to the two American League West teams in Interleague play -- the Seattle Mariners and Oakland A's. The Padres will also travel to Texas, Seattle and Anaheim.

On April 13, the Padres will play the first game in New York at the Mets new stadium -- Citi Field during their first road trip of the season.

Padres CEO Sandy Alderson said last week that ticket prices won't change for the 2009 season.

The regular season will begin a week later than usual next season -- on April 6 for the Padres against the Dodgers -- because of the World Baseball Classic.

At least three Padres indicated on Wednesday that they would like to participate in the WBC: pitcher Jake Peavy (United States) and infielders and brothers Adrian and Edgar Gonzalez (Mexico).

Catcher Luke Carlin would be eligible to play for Canada as well.

Peavy participated in the 2006 World Baseball Classic, as did Adrian Gonzalez while playing for Mexico.

PETCO Park will be the site for the double-elimination round of the WBC from March 14-19.
