Venable's shot helps Padres get first spring win

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Will Venable hit a three-run home run Wednesday as the Padres picked up their first Cactus League victory, beating the Rockies, 7-3, at the Peoria Sports Complex.

Venable, batting leadoff for the Padres (1-2-1), drove a pitch from Rockies reliever Matt Reynolds over the fence in right field in the fifth inning for a 6-1 lead.

Troy Tulowitzki had two hits for the Rockies (3-1), including a two-run home run in the top of the sixth off Padres reliever Chad Qualls.

San Diego starter Aaron Harang tossed two scoreless innings in his debut with the Padres.

Colorado starter Greg Reynolds allowed two hits and had one strikeout in his three innings.

Jorge Cantu picked up his first two spring hits for the Padres, including a two-run triple in the fourth.

Up next: The Padres are at home in Peoria again on Thursday against the D-backs at 12:05 p.m. PT. Look for regulars like third baseman Chase Headley, catcher Nick Hundley and first baseman Brad Hawpe to likely be in the lineup. Headley is hitting .800, with four hits in five at-bats. Hundley had three hits, including a grand slam against the Mariners on Feb. 27.

Talk about a home-field advantage. The Rockies will play at Salt River Fields for the fourth time in five games when Jorge De La Rosa takes the hill for Colorado on Thursday at 1:10 p.m. MT against the Giants in Scottsdale. The club is 3-0 at home. Felipe Paulino, Huston Street, Sean White, Matt Belisle, Cory Riordan and Rex Brothers are also scheduled to pitch.
