Hudson eyes weekend return
DENVER -- Padres second baseman Orlando Hudson bid his teammates a temporary farewell on Tuesday, hopeful that he will be playing alongside them by the weekend.Hudson left Denver before Tuesday's game to begin a rehab assignment with Class A Lake Elsinore. Padres manager Bud Black said Hudson will play in three games with the Storm beginning on Wednesday. "We'll re-evaluate after that," Black said. "We want him back. He's doing well." If all goes well, Hudson, who is on the 15-day disabled list after suffering a strained groin on May 25, could join the team in Minnesota by the weekend, in time to play against his former team. Hudson showed no ill effects of the injury after running the bases, fielding ground balls and taking batting practice before Monday's game at Coors Field. In his first season with the Padres, Hudson is hitting .217 with seven RBIs.
Hawpe nursing sore left elbow
DENVER -- Padres first baseman/outfielder Brad Hawpe was out of the lineup for the second straight game on Tuesday, while nursing left elbow soreness.Padres manager Bud Black said Hawpe injured his elbow while making a throw from right field against the Nationals on Sunday. Hawpe took batting practice on Tuesday and was available as a pinch-hitter, Black said. San Diego's skipper said throwing the ball is still causing Hawpe some discomfort, but he doesn't expect Hawpe to make a trip to the disabled list. Hawpe, who spent his first 6 1/2 Major League seasons in Colorado before the Rockies released him last August and he then signed with and finished the season with the Rays, is hitting .236 with four home runs and 19 RBIs in his first year with the Padres.
