Padres reinstate LHP Clayton Richard from 15-Day DL and option LHP Tommy Layne to AAA Tucson

The San Diego Padres announced today that they have reinstated left-handed pitcher Clayton Richard from the 15-day disabled list and optioned left-handed pitcher Tommy Layne to AAA Tucson. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.

Richard, 29, had been on the 15-day disabled list with an intestinal virus since May 5th. In two rehab starts with Triple-A Tucson, the left-hander was 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA (3 ER, 12.0 IP) with 12 strikeouts and no walks. He was 0-4 with an 8.54 ERA (25 ER/26.1 IP) in six starts for the Padres this season. Over parts of six Major League seasons with the Chicago White Sox (2008-09) and Padres (2009-13), he has gone 44-46 with a 4.29 ERA (356 ER/747.0 IP) in 141 games, 124 starts.

Layne, 28, appeared in his only game with the Padres yesterday against Arizona after being recalled on Friday, tossing 2.1 innings against Arizona. He was 1-3 with a 4.00 ERA (8 ER, 18.0 IP) with 13 strikeouts in 19 relief appearances with Triple-A Tucson. He made his Major League debut last season with the Padres, going 2-0 with a 3.24 ERA (6 ER, 16.2 IP) with 25 strikeouts in 26 games after being acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks. After being converted to a reliever with Double-A San Antonio last season, he had a 1.31 ERA (3 ER, 20.2 IP) with 27 strikeouts in 29 appearances before being selected by the Padres on August 14, 2012. Layne was originally signed by Arizona as a 26th-round selection in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft.
