Out call on appeal play in San Diego stands after review

Falu ruled to have missed third base before touching home in fourth inning

SAN DIEGO -- After scoring three runs in the first inning Wednesday against Reds ace Johnny Cueto, the Padres looked like they tacked on a fourth run on a double to left-center field by Seth Smith in the fourth inning.

But after Irving Falu scored from first base on the play for what looked to be a 4-0 lead, the Reds appealed the play, with Cueto throwing over to third baseman Ramon Santiago. Third-base umpire Bill Miller ruled Falu out.

San Diego manager Bud Black opted to use his manager's challenge to dispute the call, but it stood after review. Because of Falu's misstep, Smith was credited with a single and not a double.
