Sporting the Padres' new road uniforms, Phil Nevin belted a grand slam in the fifth inning and Jay Payton smacked a two-run homer two batters later off Dodgers starter Hideo Nomo. Brian Lawrence held the Dodgers to one run in five innings to pick up the victory on Opening Day.

The Dodgers opened the season with Shawn Green at first base and their newest addition, Milton Bradley, in center field. Green homered and Bradley had a pair of hits and a pair of walks but Hideo Nomo wasn't sharp and the Padres broke the game open with six runs in the fifth inning.
