Hurricane Relief

Individually, through their teams, and through the Players Trust, Major Leaguers donated hundreds of thousands of dollars for food, clothing and other necessities distributed to families displaced by Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma. Players volunteered in temporary medical facilities, renovated damaged homes and delivered supplies and equipment to victims of the storm.

Major Leaguers also know that rebuilding the Gulf Region will be a lengthy process. Through the Players Trust, they are committed to maintaining public awareness and providing long-term assistance in the rebuilding effort.

• A $1 million grant from the Trust helped launch the Volunteers of America Gulf Region Rental Housing Development Fund. The contribution is being used to develop affordable housing for 1,000 people in the Gulf Coast region.
• Rental Housing Development Fund results to date:
• Terraces on Tulane, a 200-unit, senior-housing complex opened March 2010
• Elysian Courtyards of Gentilly, a 150-unit, mixed-income and single-family housing complex, opened October 2010
• The Groves at Mile Branch Creek, a 129-unit, mixed-income and single-family housing complex, projected to open June 2011
• A grant from the Players Trust to Volunteers of America's Southeast affiliate funded mobile medical treatment and maintenance for low-income and uninsured people who currently lack access to routine medical services.
• The Players Trust granted funding to the Greater New Orleans Lighthouse Program to provide after-school programs for children in low-income neighborhoods to encourage families to return to the area.
• In partnership with Volunteers of America, Major Leaguers lend their celebrity to public service announcements ensuring that the needs of the Gulf Region are not forgotten.
• The Players Trust is partnering with Volunteers of America in a multi-year, multi-million dollar program to construct and rehabilitate affordable housing for working families displaced by the storms.
